1. Document the network and device boundaries
Record device instances, network numbers, BBMD or routing requirements, controller ownership and access constraints before large-scale discovery.
2. Map points with engineering context
A raw object name is rarely enough. Add equipment, location, units, normal state, alarm significance and write permissions.
Use the available data to narrow the investigation, but confirm the root cause with site context before changing controls, billing or maintenance decisions.
3. Control write access
Not every exposed object should be writable. Define command priorities, fail-safe behaviour and responsibility for setpoints and overrides.
4. Commission trends and alarms
Confirm that trends capture the required resolution and that alarms are actionable, correctly prioritised and routed to the right team.
